Sydney Olympic Games Sailing Triathlon Facilities

Client: Olympic Coordination Authority
Capabilities: Pontoons
Region: Sydney (New South Wales)
Completed: January 2000

The Olympic Sailing Shore Base included the supply and installation of four especially de-signed steel pontoons used for launching sailing boats for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. The pontoons floated with only a 50mm freeboard around the edges to allow easy launching of the dingies but were designed to be stable under crowd loading. The pontoons were removed on completion of the games.

The Triathlon Facility included the provision of a removable piled ramp, starting pontoons and a media pontoon with raised seating. The ramp and pontoons which were in public areas adjacent to the Sydney Opera House were constructed in the three days before the triathlon event and had to be removed the day after the event. The piles were designed to be unbolted at seabed level so that they could be used for subsequent triathlon races.
