Sydney Park Village Piling

Client: Multiplex
Capabilities: Piling, Investigation
Region: Sydney (New South Wales)
Completed: May 2002

Sydney Park Village Stages 5&6 comprises a number of residential apartment buildings which are part of the development of the old brick works site in Alexandria. This section of site was particularly challenging as the old quarry had deep and steep walls such that piles ranged in length from 2 - 40 metres over very short distances.

The project involved the inventive use of a piled raft solution. The piles, which had widely differing loads and lengths had to be designed and installed such that the settlement was 30mm at ultimate load. Each pile had to be designed individually resulting in a range of pile sizes and founding criteria being used to satisfy the requirements. A team of five engineers and supervisors monitored the installation and performed thirty load tests during the works to ensure that the performance criteria were met.
The works included:

  • supply of 5000m of tubular steel piling
  • driving of 160 steel piles up to 600mm dia. x up to 40m long
  • dynamic testing to verify integrity and load carrying capacity of the new steel piles
