Recovery of Cremorne Point Wharf Pontoon

Client: NSW Maritime
Capabilities: Maintenance
Region: Sydney (New South Wales)
Completed: January 2009

Cremorne Point Ferry Pontoon sunk overnight during storms in June 2007. The submerged weight of the concrete pontoon was approximately 150 tonnes so it could not be lifted with any readily available crane barges.

Waterway Constructions carried out the emergency works to recover the pontoon from the harbour floor. Divers were used to secure lifting slings around the pontoon and to fit air manifolds to the manholes so that water could be displaced from the compartments. The pontoon was then jacked to the surface using 150 tonne jacks supported from twin service barges.

Later the pontoon was towed away and refurbished before being put back into service.
