Swansea Bridge Fender Replacement

Characteristics of the project included:

• Removal of dolphin pile structure and supporting piles either side of navigation channel;
• Installation of 12 steel piles;
• Supply and installation of 2 steel services fender;
• Supply and installation of 20 pier face fenders;
• Supply and installation of 12 anodes;
• Heavy foundations involving piles driven from floating equipment;
• Significant fabricated steel superstructures;
• Complex environmental risk management;
• Complex design management.

The project involved the use of 3 cranes to carry out a simultaneous lift of the fender units from shore to barge, which was a complex yet innovative solution for the installation of the services fenders.

Contract works required Waterway to close the navigation channel to the public with tight quality and tolerance requirements due to water, sewer and gas mains in the vicinity of the works.
