Northside Storage Tunnel, Northbridge

Client: Northside Storage Tunnel Alliance
Capabilities: Construction
Region: Sydney (New South Wales)
Completed: November 1999

Provision of the marine works for loading out some 2 million cubic metres of spoil from the Northside Storage Tunnel, a major sewerage tunnel construction from Lane Cove to Manly in Sydney.
Our works included:

  • The construction of a roll on roll off wharf to allow access of 150 tonne vehicles with mining equipment onto site. To speed construction, the wharf beams and deck were installed in a single 30m x 7m section
  • The construction of 14 mooring dolphins and walkways for the 2600 tonne spoil barges
  • Erection of conveyors and a 60m x 30m soundproofed clear span building over the area formed by the dolphins to provide a closed loading area for the 2600t spoil barges
  • Construction of a 500sqm piled working area over the water

All works were performed with all plant silenced to noise levels less than 75db at 7m. The noise from pile driving was reduced by 20db by noise insulating both the pile hammer and the pile. Anchors were installed in the piles to carry tension loads. All structures were removed on completion.

Access to the site was limited and severe environmental restrictions were observed.
