Iron Cove Bridge

Client: Baulderstone
Capabilities: Construction, Piling, Bridges
Region: Sydney (New South Wales)
Completed: March 2010

The RTA constructed a second bridge over Iron Cove as part of the inner west busway along Victoria road project. Waterway Constructions was contracted to install the in-water piles and pilecaps.

The job included the installation of 64 vertical and raking 790mm od piles for 6 pilecaps. These piles were vibrated and/or driven into the sandstone. Some vertical and the raking piles were installed using the piling leader on Waterway Construction's "Kochi" heavy lift and piling barge.

The pilecaps were precast off site and brought to site by dumb barge. The 100 tonne pilecaps were lifted over the piles by the "Kochi" and then filled with reinforcement and concrete after sealing. This method of construction, developed by Waterway Constructions, meant that the pilecaps, which are always underwater, could be easily built in the dry with significant programme and temporary works savings.
