Work Health & Safety Policy

It is the responsibility of Waterway Constructions to ensure so far as is reasonably practicable the safety of our employees, customers, visitors at our workplaces and the general public who may be affected by our construction activities.

Every employee regardless of position or title has an individual responsibility to be uncompromising with regard to safety. Risk management will be incorporated as an integral part of our business initiatives and operations, ensuring that hazards are identified, assessed, controlled (eliminated where practicable, or minimised) and monitored.

Waterway Constructions Senior Management is committed to demonstrating leadership with respect to the safety management system and taking accountability for the effectiveness of the system. The Senior Management Team will also support other relevant management roles to demonstrate their leadership as it applies to their area of responsibility. Senior management will also ensure the integration of the safety management system into the organisation’s business processes and promote the use of a process approach and risk-based thinking. We are also committed to:

  • The achievement of WHS excellence as a genuine organisational aspiration rather than due to mandatory requirement.
  • Prevent injury and illness through safe systems of work for all employees, subcontractors and visitors.
  • Implement this WHS Policy and maintain a WHS management system to AS/NZS 4801
  • Abide by all statutory and regulatory obligations and pursue best practice applications beyond these requirements.
  • Provide the necessary WHS training for all staff to safely carry out their jobs.
  • Consult with staff to identify and control risks.
  • Maintain plant and equipment in a safe operating condition.
  • Set and monitor WHS improvement objectives and targets.
  • Provide effective and efficient return to work management.
  • Regularly review this policy to ensure it continues to reflect legislative requirements and organisational needs for continuous improvement.

Managers and Supervisors shall:

  • Comply with Waterway Constructions policies and procedures and ensure employees work in a safe manner.
  • Risk assess each activity before commencing to minimize and control the risks.
  • Ensure employees have appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Participate in the review and improvement of workplace safety.
  • Report any incidents and implement appropriate initial response.
  • Communicate clearly to staff all workplace safety objectives.

All employees are expected to:

  • Abide by all relevant laws and regulations.
  • Comply with Waterway Constructions policies and procedures.
  • Present fit-for-work and maintain a workplace free from the influence of non-prescribed drugs and alcohol.
  • Participate in workplace risk assessment through consultation.
  • Not undertake any work or operate equipment for which they have not been trained.
  • Advise their Supervisor of situations where greater risk control measures are required.
  • Not undertake work that is considered unsafe.
  • Report all incidents to the Supervisor.
  • Wear all appropriate PPE as required.
  • Comply with the Waterway Constructions Safety Charter.
